Weblog

I’m writing a blog because we can’t go back to LiveJournal.

Egg

Large brown egg.
A mother’s gift nuzzled in my hand.
Maternal warmth swapped for a cold, clammy palm.
It will never top of a croque madame.
Because this is a weapon.
My cage-free, pasture-raised projectile.

I amble across town, feeling its soft membrane.
Little sandpaper bumps pushing back.
This is concealed carry.
Power and omega-3s in my grasp.
I cross the street.
And my journey is interrupted.
Is it a truck? SUV? Hatchback?
My right of way upended by the right to get to a red light fifteen seconds faster.
They don’t know I’m armed.

“Sic semper tyrannis!”
I let loose.

Egg will never hatch.
Never learn how sunlight feels on a crisp California morning.
Never nest atop its own eggs.
Its destiny is to learn to fly.

It soars.
Propelled by a former right fielder who doesn’t want to be run over.
It finds its mark.
Yolk dripping down a rear window.
Shell on the nearby pavement.
The taste of victory.
The scales of justice momentarily tipped in my favor.
A single egg conquering 7,000 pounds of under-regulated steel.
I feel, for a moment, a little power.
Thank you, large brown egg.

Here's to fewer algorithms

Why even start another blog in the year 2024?

Well, you don’t need me to tell you that your attention is incredibly divided. In fact, if you got a notification while reading this, I wouldn’t blame you from getting distracted. You know what? Go check it, I’ll be here when you get back.

I just want to create a little space for sharing. Sharing things with a little nuance. Maybe giving myself a little while to think and process before reacting with the quickest, hottest take. And to get back to the parts of the internet I love: discovering new things with the people I care about. I want to learn more from the people I know and spend a little less time with the things the algorithm is pushing to me.

So, I’m here, starting a blog, with the intent of sharing things that I love — art, commerce, quotes, food, and other personal ephemera — with folks who want to slow down for a bit.

I’d rather a few folks I know well graze upon this than a bunch of folks I’ll never meet on the internet.

Did that answer my own question? No, but I want to create more and receive less. And it starts with a couple of scribbles here.
